Bengali Specifics

Bengali is not Hindi in a different script

Bengali is Indo-Aryan, like Hindi and Marathi, and shares a lot of vocabulary with both. It also throws away something they both keep and insists on two things neither marks. Every Bengali example here is real translator output.

No grammatical gender at all

Nouns, adjectives, verbs and pronouns never inflect for gender. সে covers both he and she, and আমি গতকাল বাজারে গিয়েছিলাম is "I went to the market yesterday" from a man or a woman alike. The guess Hindi must make never comes up.

Formality lands on the verb

তুই, তুমি and আপনি are not interchangeable pronouns. Each conjugates the verb its own way, so one choice rewrites every verb after it. কোথায় যাচ্ছিস, তুমি কোথায় যাচ্ছ and আপনি কোথায় যাচ্ছেন are one question at three social distances.

Numbers need a classifier

You cannot count with a bare number. Three books is তিনটি বই, using টি. Three students is তিনজন ছাত্র, using জন, because students are people. Hindi says तीन किताबें with no classifier, which is why Hindi-shaped output drops them.

The present tense has no "is"

সে একজন ডাক্তার is a whole sentence, and word for word it says "he a doctor". The copula returns only outside the present: ছিল in সে একজন ডাক্তার ছিল, হবে in সে একজন ডাক্তার হবে.

Bengali also carries two written registers. সাধু ভাষা, the older literary standard, has left modern prose, and চলিত ভাষা is what newspapers and business writing use today.

Side by Side

The same sentences in Bengali and in Hindi

Every line below is real output from this translator, run twice on the same English input: once into Bengali, once into Hindi.

EnglishBengaliHindiWhat changed
He is my friend.সে আমার বন্ধু।वह मेरा दोस्त है।Hindi marks the friend's gender on मेरा. Bengali marks nothing, and has no verb.
She is my friend.সে আমার বন্ধু।वह मेरी दोस्त है।The Bengali repeats the row above letter for letter. The Hindi moved to मेरी.
I went to the market yesterday.আমি গতকাল বাজারে গিয়েছিলাম।मैं कल बाज़ार गया था।गया tells a reader the speaker is male. গিয়েছিলাম says nothing, so nothing can be wrong here.
He is a doctor.সে একজন ডাক্তার।वह एक डॉक्टर है।Hindi needs है. Bengali leaves the present tense with no copula.
The book is red.বইটি লাল।किताब लाल है।No verb again, and টি is glued onto বই to do the work of "the".
I have three books.আমার কাছে তিনটি বই আছে।मेरे पास तीन किताबें हैं।Bengali counts with টি and keeps বই singular. Hindi pluralises and uses no classifier.
There are three students in the room.ঘরে তিনজন ছাত্র আছে।कमरे में तीन छात्र हैं।People take জন, not টি. The wrong classifier is the usual machine slip.
Where are you going, sir?আপনি কোথায় যাচ্ছেন?आप कहाँ जा रहे हैं, साहब?Both go formal, but Bengali conjugates for it: যাচ্ছেন for আপনি, যাচ্ছ for তুমি.

Eight sentences, and the two languages part company on gender, on whether "to be" exists, on counting, and on politeness.

Proofreading Guide

What to check in Bengali output

Machine Bengali fails in a few predictable places, and knowing them turns proofreading into three quick passes.

Gender: the check you do not have to make

"My brother is a good teacher" and "my sister is a good teacher" came back as আমার ভাই একজন ভালো শিক্ষক and আমার বোন একজন ভালো শিক্ষক. Only the sibling word changed: ভালো did not move and শিক্ষক took no feminine form.

The catch is the return trip. Because সে carries no gender, Bengali into English forces a guess, and "he" is the default. Run a passage about a woman back through the swap button and expect to fix the pronouns.

Formality: one question, three verbs

English "you" is one word for everyone alive. Bengali makes you pick a social distance before you can write the verb, and the choice repeats on every verb after it.

One English question, three Bengali answers, each from an English input written at that level.
Level"Where are you going?"Read it asWho you say it to
তুই · intimateকোথায় যাচ্ছিস?kothay jachchhish?Siblings, childhood friends, small children. Aimed at a stranger it is an insult.
তুমি · familiarতুমি কোথায় যাচ্ছ?tumi kothay jachchho?Friends, peers, people younger than you, most family.
আপনি · formalআপনি কোথায় যাচ্ছেন?apni kothay jachchhen?Strangers, elders, customers, anything that looks like business writing.

There is no tone selector on this page and no formality setting in the API behind it. The one lever is the English you paste, and it works: the three rows above came from a polite, a plain and a deliberately rough English version of the same question. Write the English at the level you want, then check that every verb stayed there. "Sit down and wait here" gave বসো, the politer version বসুন.

Classifiers: টা, টি and জন

Bengali has no articles. Instead, particles attach to the end of the noun and do two jobs: they make counting grammatical and mark a noun as definite. "The food was delicious" came back as খাবারটা খুব সুস্বাদু ছিল and "your order has been shipped" as আপনার অর্ডারটি পাঠানো হয়েছে. Numbers pick them up too, in varying form: দুটো আম for two mangoes, চারজন লোক for four people.

Roughly, টা and টি go on things and জন on people, with টি a shade more formal. Dropped classifiers are the commonest way Bengali output announces that a machine wrote it: the sentence stays understandable and stops being anyone's.

Register: চলিত, not সাধু

Bengali spent much of the twentieth century with two written standards. সাধু ভাষা is the older literary form, with longer verb endings and heavier Sanskritic vocabulary. চলিত ভাষা won. Output that reads like a nineteenth-century novel is not a fancier translation, it is the wrong register.

One line deserves a second look. Twenty-nine of the thirty came back in আপনি, because a phrasebook line arrives with no context and the polite reading is the safe one. "I love you" did not: it came back as আমি তোমাকে ভালোবাসি, with তোমাকে from তুমি.

The romanizations are a pronunciation aid, not a standard. Bengali has no official romanization scheme, so শুভ সকাল turns up as shubho shokal, shubha sakal and subho sokal, all the same two words. The inherent vowel sounds closer to "o" than "a", which is why অনেক reads as onek.

Script & Typing

Bengali script, fonts, and typing without a Bengali keyboard

Bengali is written in the Bengali script, an abugida of its own and not a variant of Devanagari. It works on the same principle but the letters are different shapes, and the two are not interchangeable. The same script writes Assamese and Manipuri. It is proper Unicode, so the output here is real text: searchable, selectable, and safe to paste into a document, an email or a form field.

You do not need a Bengali keyboard

That is the answer for anyone looking for a way to "type in Bengali": type English on the keyboard you already have, and copy Bengali out of the output box.

What it does not do is transliterate. It translates meaning. Typing ami tomake bhalobashi will not produce আমি তোমাকে ভালোবাসি letter by letter, because that is a spelling conversion and not something we have built. Type "I love you" instead. To read romanized Bengali rather than write it, use the table above.

If the Bengali shows up as boxes

Empty rectangles, sometimes called tofu, mean the device is missing a Bengali font, not that the translation failed. Windows, macOS, iOS and Android all ship one, so this turns up on older systems, stripped-down Linux installs, and apps that force a font with no Bengali coverage. Installing Noto Sans Bengali fixes it; the text itself was never damaged.

Conjuncts are the related snag. Bengali fuses consonant clusters into single ligatures that look nothing like their parts, and they are everywhere in ordinary words: অপেক্ষা, ধন্যবাদ, ছাত্র. A font with thin conjunct coverage breaks them apart. Bengali also needs more vertical room than Latin text at the same size, so a clipped line is a line-height problem, not a translation problem.

Checking Bengali you cannot read

You often cannot judge the result, which is the reason you needed it. Round-trip it with the swap button and see whether it comes home meaning the same thing, remembering that pronouns are what the return trip cannot get right. Scan the verb endings for a single formality level, because a passage that starts in আপনি and drifts into তুমি reads as careless. And before anything is printed, have a Bengali speaker read it.

FAQ

English to Bengali — common questions

Is this English to Bengali translator free?

Yes, with no credit card at any tier. Without an account you get 3 translations a day and up to 2,000 words per request. A free account raises that to 5 a day and 10,000 words. Paid plans go further: 25 a day on Starter, 100 on Pro, unlimited on Business.

Does it support the Bengali script?

Yes. Output is proper Bengali script (বাংলা), an abugida of its own and not a form of Devanagari. Copy it into any document, email or social platform; it renders anywhere modern Unicode is supported.

Will it use তুই, তুমি or আপনি?

It follows the register of the English you paste. "Where are you going, sir?" came back with আপনি and the verb যাচ্ছেন; plain "Where are you going?" with তুমি and যাচ্ছ; a rough version with the তুই form যাচ্ছিস. There is no tone setting, so write the English at the level you want and check the verbs.

Can I translate Bengali back to English?

Yes. Hit the swap (⇄) button to flip source and target, or use the main translator at /tools/translator/ for any of the 23 supported languages. Watch the pronouns on the way back: Bengali সে covers both he and she.

How long can my input be?

Up to 2,000 words per request without an account, and 10,000 words per request once you are signed in. For anything longer, translate it in sections.

Can I type Bengali using English letters?

Not in the sense of a transliteration keyboard. It translates meaning, so you type an English sentence and get Bengali script back. It will not turn "ami tomake bhalobashi" into আমি তোমাকে ভালোবাসি letter by letter. To read romanized Bengali, use the phrase table on this page.

How is English to Bengali different from English to Hindi?

Three things. Bengali marks no grammatical gender, where Hindi must pick मेरा or मेरी and गया or गई. Bengali drops the verb to be in the present, so "he is a doctor" is সে একজন ডাক্তার against Hindi वह एक डॉक्टर है. And Bengali counts with classifiers, তিনটি বই and তিনজন ছাত্র, where Hindi says तीन किताबें.

Does it write Indian or Bangladeshi Bengali?

Standard modern written Bengali, the চলিত ভাষা register shared across West Bengal and Bangladesh. It is not tuned to either country, and some everyday vocabulary differs, জল and পানি for water being the best known pair. For readers in Kolkata or Dhaka specifically, review word choice.

Can I translate a Word document or PDF into Bengali?

Not directly; it works on pasted text. Copy the text out of the document, paste it in, and copy the Bengali back, running long documents section by section within the word cap.
