Tamil Specifics

Tamil breaks in places Hindi and Marathi never do

Tamil is Dravidian, not Indo-Aryan, and shares no script, grammar or politeness system with the northern languages. Four things decide whether the output reads right, and every example below came from this translator.

Written Tamil and spoken Tamil are two registers

Tamil is diglossic. செந்தமிழ் is the written language of print and official text. கொடுந்தமிழ், the spoken variety, uses different verb endings, not just a softer tone. Picking the wrong one is the loudest tell in machine-translated Tamil.

Written: நீங்கள் என்ன செய்கிறீர்கள்?
Spoken: என்னடா பண்ற?
Same question. Almost no shared material.

One word can swallow a whole phrase

Tamil is agglutinative. Case, number, tense, person and negation stack as suffixes onto one stem, so a three-word English phrase routinely returns as one Tamil word.

from the house (3 words)
வீட்டிலிருந்து (1 word)

Nouns are rational or irrational, not masculine or feminine

Tamil splits nouns into உயர்திணை, the rational class of people and deities, and அஃறிணை, everything else including animals and objects. The verb agrees with the class, so one English verb takes two Tamil endings.

The boys came: சிறுவர்கள் வந்தார்கள்.
The dogs came: நாய்கள் வந்தன.

Respect is an ending, not a separate polite word

There is no polite pronoun beside a plain one. Respect is carried by the plural: a respected person is அவர் and takes a plural verb, a child or close friend is அவன். A sentence about one person can look plural.

The teacher came: ஆசிரியர் பள்ளிக்கு வந்தார்.
The boy came: சிறுவன் பள்ளிக்கு வந்தான்.

MeaningFrom formal EnglishFrom casual EnglishWhat moved
I am going to the market to buy vegetables.நான் காய்கறிகள் வாங்குவதற்காக சந்தைக்குச் செல்கிறேன்.சந்தைக்குப் போய் கொஞ்சம் காய்கறி வாங்கிட்டு வரேன்.செல்கிறேன் becomes வரேன், and நான் disappears; the ending carries it.
He has not arrived yet.அவர் இன்னும் வரவில்லை.அவன் இன்னும் வரவே இல்லை.Formality moved the pronoun: அவர் against அவன்.
What are you doing?நீங்கள் என்ன செய்கிறீர்கள்?என்னடா பண்ற?செய்கிறீர்கள் collapses to பண்ற; நீங்கள் drops out.
Tell me what happened.என்ன நடந்தது என்று தெரிவிக்குமாறு கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறேன்.என்ன நடந்துச்சுன்னு சொல்லு, சரியா?The literary quotative என்று contracts to the suffix ன்னு, and the verb becomes a bare imperative.
I do not know.எனக்குத் தெரியாது.தெரியாது.The dative pronoun is dropped. One word is a complete sentence.
Please sit down.தயவுசெய்து அமரும்.உக்காரு, வா.Not one verb at two politeness levels: அமர் and உக்கார் are different verbs.
The water is very cold.தண்ணீர் மிகவும் குளிராக இருக்கிறது.தண்ணீரு கொளகொளன்னு இருக்கு மச்சான்.இருக்கிறது shortens to இருக்கு and the noun gains a vowel: தண்ணீர் to தண்ணீரு.

There is no register switch on this page and no tone parameter in the request. The translator matches the register of the English it was given, which makes your English the only control you have.

Forms, product pages, notices and printed invitations take the written register. Subtitles, chat copy, app microcopy and dialogue take the spoken one, where formal Tamil sounds stilted immediately. Spoken Tamil also varies by region and community in a way written Tamil does not, so treat the casual column as one plausible version, not a neutral one.

Agglutination

Why your 60-word paragraph comes back as 30 words

English builds meaning from separate words: prepositions, articles, auxiliaries. Tamil glues suffixes onto one stem. Nothing is lost, it is packed tighter.

How the Tamil word veettiliruntu is built from three pieces A diagram showing the Tamil word for "from the house" assembled from the stem meaning house, a suffix meaning in, and a suffix meaning from, producing a single word where English uses three. THREE ENGLISH WORDS, ONE TAMIL WORD வீட்டு "house" + இல் "in" + இருந்து "from" வீட்டிலிருந்து "from the house"
One noun, five cases. Every English phrase on the left needs two words or more. Every Tamil form is one.
EnglishTamilRead it as
houseவீடுveedu
in the houseவீட்டில்veettil
from the houseவீட்டிலிருந்துveettilirundhu
to the houseவீட்டிற்குveettirku
of the houseவீட்டின்veettin
even in the houseவீட்டிலும்கூடveettilumkooda

Whole clauses compress the same way, with negation, tense and relative clauses all becoming endings.

EnglishWordsTamilWords
I could not go.4என்னால் போக முடியவில்லை.3
He said that he would not be able to come.10தனக்கு வர முடியாது என்று அவன் சொன்னான்.6
The people who did not come will also get it.10வராதவர்களுக்கும் கிடைக்கும்.2

That last row is the extreme case. வராதவர்களுக்கும் holds six pieces of English in one word: the negative, the relative clause "who did not come", the plural, the human class, the dative "to" and the "also".

A word counter is therefore a poor progress bar. The character count does not halve with it, and Tamil stacks vowel signs above and below the baseline, so a Tamil string can be shorter in words, similar in width and taller than the Latin it replaced. Check buttons and table headers visually.

Agreement

Rational and irrational, the distinction with no English equivalent

If you have translated into Hindi or Marathi you will be watching for grammatical gender. Tamil sorts plurals by whether the noun is a rational being.

Identical English verbs and tense, different Tamil endings. Only the noun class changed.
Rational (உயர்திணை)TamilIrrational (அஃறிணை)Tamil
The boys came.சிறுவர்கள் வந்தார்கள்.The dogs came.நாய்கள் வந்தன.
The teachers are waiting.ஆசிரியர்கள் காத்திருக்கிறார்கள்.The buses are waiting.பேருந்துகள் காத்திருக்கின்றன.
Two men are standing there.இரண்டு ஆண்கள் அங்கே நிற்கிறார்கள்.Two trees are standing there.இரண்டு மரங்கள் அங்கே நிற்கின்றன.

Rational plurals end in ‑ஆர்கள், irrational plurals in ‑அன or ‑இன்றன. Nothing in the English signals which is needed, so the translator has to know a bus is not a person. Animals are irrational in Tamil grammar whatever you feel about them, which catches people out when writing about pets.

The respect ladder is built from plurals

Politeness uses the same plural machinery. There is no separate polite pronoun of the kind Hindi has in आप; respect means treating one person as grammatically plural, right through the verb.

EnglishTamilWhy the ending differs
The teacher came to the school.ஆசிரியர் பள்ளிக்கு வந்தார்.Respectful, so the plural-shaped வந்தார்.
The boy came to the school.சிறுவன் பள்ளிக்கு வந்தான்.No honorific, so the singular வந்தான்.
Where are you going, dude?என்னடா, எங்கே போற?Familiar address drops the verb to the spoken போற.
My grandmother is reading a book.என் பாட்டி ஒரு புத்தகம் படிக்கிறார்.படிக்கிறார் is plural-shaped. Elders take the honorific by default.

That last row confuses people reading a translation back. படிக்கிறார் looks like "they are reading" but means "she is reading", respectfully. A round-trip that turns one person into "they" is the honorific surfacing, not an error.

The reverse mistake matters more. English says nothing about the relationship between speaker and subject, so the honorific decision is made for you, and the plain form addressed to a customer or an elder reads as rude. When text is going to a named person, check that ending first.

Phrase Reference

25 common English phrases in Tamil

All twenty-five came out of the translator on this page, not a phrasebook. The third column is a plain romanized reading.

Take care of yourselfஉங்களை நீங்களே கவனித்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள்ungalai neengale kavaniththukkollungal
Excuse meமன்னிக்கவும்mannikkavum

Three lines deserve a second look. "I am sorry" and "Excuse me" both came back as மன்னிக்கவும், one word covering both jobs. "Let us go" produced போகலாம், with no pronoun in it. And "I love you" used the intimate உன்னை, the honorific decision above turning up in a line people copy unthinkingly.

The romanizations are a pronunciation aid, not a standard. Tamil has no single official romanization scheme, so வணக்கம் appears as vanakkam, vaṇakkam and vanakam, all the same word. For academic work pick one scheme, such as ISO 15919, and apply it consistently.

Script & Typing

Tamil script, fonts, and typing Tamil without a Tamil keyboard

Tamil has its own script, unrelated to Devanagari, with 12 vowels, 18 consonants and the character ஃ. It is proper Unicode, so the output is real text: searchable, selectable and safe to paste anywhere.

You do not need a Tamil keyboard to get Tamil out of this page

You type an English sentence with the keyboard you already have, and the output box gives you Tamil script to copy. What it does not do is transliterate: typing enakku pasikkiradhu will not produce எனக்கு பசிக்கிறது letter by letter. Type "I am hungry" instead.

Why names and brands come back approximated

Tamil has no separate letters for aspirated consonants, and none for several sounds English relies on, so one Tamil letter covers a range English splits. Foreign names get the nearest spelling: Bhopal came back as போபால் with no trace of the bh, Dhruv as துருவ், Bharat as பரத், coffee as காபி for want of an f.

Handling is not always consistent: in one run "Ravi" stayed in Latin script while "Thomas" became தாமஸ். Loanwords may be translated rather than transliterated, so "bus" came back as the native பேருந்து while "ticket" stayed டிக்கெட். If a name must be spelled one way throughout a document, settle it once and paste it in.

If the Tamil shows up as boxes

Empty rectangles, sometimes called tofu, mean the device is missing a Tamil font, not that the translation failed. Modern Windows, macOS, iOS and Android all ship one, so this turns up on older systems, stripped-down Linux installs and apps forcing a font with no Tamil coverage. Installing Noto Sans Tamil or Latha fixes it; the text was never damaged. Tamil also hangs vowel signs above and below the consonant, so a clipped line needs line height.

Checking Tamil you cannot read

You usually cannot judge the result, which is why you needed a translator. Round-trip it with the swap button and see whether the English comes home meaning the same thing, check the register against where the text is going, and have a Tamil speaker read anything before it is published.

FAQ

English to Tamil — common questions

Is this English to Tamil translator free?

Yes, with no credit card at any tier. Without an account you get 3 translations a day and up to 2,000 words per request. A free account raises that to 5 a day and 10,000 words. Paid plans go further: 25 a day on Starter, 100 on Pro, unlimited on Business.

Does it support the Tamil script?

Yes. Output is proper Tamil script (தமிழ்). Copy it into any document, email or social platform and it renders correctly anywhere modern Unicode is supported, which in practice is everywhere.

Do I get written Tamil or spoken Tamil?

It follows your English. Formal English produces the written செந்தமிழ் register used in print and official text, which is what documents and websites want. Casual English produces something closer to spoken Tamil. There is no register setting, so your English is the only lever.

Can I make the Tamil more casual?

Only by making your English more casual, since there is no tone or formality option. Write "the meeting's gonna start at ten" rather than "the meeting will commence at ten o'clock" and the Tamil comes back looser, with spoken endings like இருக்கு for இருக்கிறது. Spoken Tamil varies by region, so have a Tamil speaker check it.

Why is the Tamil translation so much shorter than my English?

Because Tamil is agglutinative. Case, number, tense, person and negation attach as suffixes to one stem, so "from the house" is a single word, வீட்டிலிருந்து, and ten English words can land as two. The character count does not drop with it, so check labels visually.

Can I translate Tamil back to English?

Yes. Hit the swap (⇄) button to flip source and target, or use the main translator at /tools/translator/ for any pair from the 23 supported languages.

How long can my input be?

Up to 2,000 words per request without an account, and 10,000 words per request once you are signed in. For anything longer, translate it in sections.

Can I type Tamil using English letters?

Not in the sense of a transliteration keyboard. This tool translates meaning: you type an English sentence and get Tamil script back. It will not convert "enakku pasikkiradhu" into எனக்கு பசிக்கிறது letter by letter. Type "I am hungry" instead. The phrase table above pairs every Tamil line with a romanized reading.

Can I translate a Word document or PDF into Tamil?

Not directly. This tool works on pasted text: copy it out of the document, paste it in, and copy the Tamil back, running long documents section by section to stay inside the word cap.
